The 150th anniversary of Canada is celebrated with events taking place throughout the year and all over the country.
Russell, excitingly, has a full weekend of events planned for May 19 and 20. With a fun itinerary both days, this weekend will be hosted in partnership between the Russell & District Recreation Commission and Asessippi Parkland Tourism.
“This is going to be a great event for Russell, with upwards of 2,500 spectators,” Sadie McCauley, Executive Director for Asessippi Parkland Tourism mentions. “We are looking forward to celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday party!”
Friday kicks off with a Homecoming Parade down Russell’s Main Street in honour of Olympic gold-medalist, Darren Boryskavich. A “meet and greet” will commence at the Russell Memorial Complex at 6:00 p.m. with a Recognition Ceremony at 7:00 p.m.
Following Darren’s ceremony, a ribbon cutting and re-dedication of the Multiplex will take place. The Royal Canadian Legion #159 assisted financially with the building of the original Russell Memorial Arena. This arena was dedicated as a monument to the WWII service men and women who never returned home from war. The cenotaph, which is the WWI monument in Russell, is located at the crossroads of Memorial Street and Assiniboine Street.
It is fitting that the members of the local Legion Branch #159 rededicate the WWII monument as the Russell Memorial Multiplex in honour of those important and remembered service men and women.
To end off Friday night, a lively Cabaret featuring The Ryan Keown Band will take the stage at 9:00 p.m., at the Russell Memorial Multiplex. Tickets are still available for this 18+ event. Contact Asessippi Parkland Tourism at the Russell Travel Booth for more details, 204-773-2456.
Saturday is jam packed with non-stop action, starting at 7:30 a.m. with a melt in your mouth pancake breakfast at the Russell Municipal Airport.
Kids can work off all of the maple syrup in the George P. Buleziuk Hall and at the Millennium Park, enjoying a wide array of kid’s activities from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Activities include a bouncy house, petting zoo, professional face painting, a FitKids Healthy obstacle course, as well as more exciting fun!
Food vendors and live entertainment will also be set up throughout the day at the Millennium Park.
Of course, what Canada 150 celebration would it be without the singing of O Canada and opening ceremonies at noon! Expanding Community Cancer Care – Chemo Unit will be selling hotdogs at this time as well. A Beer Gardens will also open at 12:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. the same day.
The much anticipated Air Show with Stunt Pilots, Stefan Trischuk and Kyle Fowler will fill the sky just west of Russell, taking flight at 1:00 p.m. Spectators are to gather at the Millennium Park. Tickets are for sale at russellcanada150.ca, as well as the Russell Esso C-Store, Russell Twin Valley Co-op Gas Bar, and the Russell Travel Booth.
Various entertainment will take you into the evening, along with more kid’s activities at 7:00 p.m., a “Happy Birthday” and cake cutting at 8:00 p.m., the Distant Thunderbirds Drummers at 8:30 p.m. and a huge fireworks display in the Millennium Park at dusk.
“A huge thank you to the community sponsors for making this upcoming weekend possible,” Sadie McCauley said. “Be sure to come out for some fun!”
